[ Hobbies & Crafts ] Open Question : Can you return an item in the mail to the sender in it's orignial packaging if you have already opened it?

I ordered an item off of ebay. When I took it out of the box, it did not work. I need to send it back to the seller in Japan. Can i put it back in its box that it came to me in, and seal it back with tape, and mail it back like that? Or do i have to get all new packaging?
