[ Philosophy ] Open Question : Do you believe in this Socrates belief?

The psyche is what should give direction to one's life - not appetite or passions. I apologize in advance for being an idiot but what exactly does he mean by this? If you have a passion for carpentry is he advising you not to become a carpenter? I understand the psyche is the "inner self" of a human being but what is the difference between your psyche and your passions? Are your passions and desires not related to whom you are as a person?
