About half of the Garden State Parkway will be closed to traffic because of Hurricane Irene.
Gov. Chris Christie says the parkway's southbound lanes will be closed to traffic at Exit 98 in Wall Township beginning at 8 p.m. Friday. Traffic will be routed to Interstate 195 west.
The shift is designed aid residents evacuating the Ocean County resort.
Christie has urged people to evacuate the barrier islands in Atlantic, Cape May and Ocean counties.
Gov. Chris Christie announced on Friday that the Garden State Parkway south of Exit 98 in Wall Township will be closed to southbound traffic beginning at 8 p.m. Friday. Mandatory evacuations on Long Beach Island began Friday morning.

Cape May County emergency officials announced late Firday that as of 8 p.m. Aug. 26, the southbound lanes of the Garden State Parkway will be closed except to emergency traffic from Exit 98 south.
All lanes of Route 47 and Route 347 will be outbound from the county, according to emergency officials.
