Prince William of Wales and Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge are scheduled to arrive in Los Angeles at 3:40 pm local time. William and Kate, as they are better known, will be greeted by the Governor, the LA mayor, and the British Ambassador to the US. Afterwards, they will head to a conference about trade investment in the United Kingdom.
The visit comes after the newly wedded photogenic couple finish up a nine-day tour of Canada, where they were met with throngs of well-wishers. The tour finishes in Calgary, Alberta, where William and Kate kicked off the Calgary Stampede, an annual 10-day rodeo that's the big event of year for Calgary.
Friday evening, the pair will attend a Consular-General Reception where businessmen and politicians will get a chance to be close to royalty. On Saturday, the prince will play polo in a benefit tournament. After their LA visit is complete, they fly back to Britain.
Amid the pomp and pageantry of the royal visit, the royal couple had a chance to show a populist side. Six-year-old Diamond Marshall is dying from undifferentiated sarcoma, but had one last wish: to meet an actual princess.
The Children's Wish Foundation of Canada arranged for Diamond to meet Kate when she arrived at the airport in Calgary. Diamond brought Kate flowers and ignored all royal etiquette by giving Kate a big hug, which Kate cheerfully returned. William and Kate also chatted with Diamond's father and stepmother for a few moments--Diamond's mother died from cancer four years ago.
"She was as fancy as she looks on the TV," said Diamond.
In the video below showing the royal arrival at Calgary airport, Diamond rushes out at about 48 seconds in.
