What is Chloroform?*Chloroform is a colorless liquid that has a sweet smell and taste. How Can Chloroform Get Into Well Water?*Chloroform can enter well water in several ways. It is important to remember that eventually groundwater becomes well water. Finally, the process by which water is sterilized for drinking with chlorine creates trace amounts of chloroform as a byproduct.
How to make the Chloroform
In the past, Chloroform was used as an anesthetic during the nineteenth century, but it isn’t used that way today. It was discovered by Samuel Guthrie through use of the Haloform Reaction in 1831. Chloroform is a colorless liquid with a pleasant, nonirritating odor and a slightly sweet taste. It will burn only when it reaches very high temperatures.
How to make Chloroform Recipies:
1. Add equal amounts alcohol and Hypochlorite to the beaker.
2. Heat the mixture on low heat for several minutes. Do not bring to boil.
3. Carefully smell the mixture. If it has a sweet, slightly fruity smell then it’s done.
4. Keep it in an air tight container and away from florescent lights until you use it.
Other names for chloroform are trichloromethane and methyl trichloride.
