Right after he became the second closer in Marlins history to record 30 saves in two different seasons, Leo Nunez was summoned into the office of manager Jack McKeon and told he was traded.
“Good luck,” McKeon told him. Nunez asked, his face turning pale.
Beinfest said that after the Marlins dropped out of the race by going 5-23 in June, it made no sense to trade for a two-month rental player before the annual nonwaiver deadline.
McKeon wants another wild card
Count McKeon among those who would support a realignment proposal that would add another wild-card team to the playoff mix.
“If I was voting for that, I’d vote for it,” McKeon said.
Adding a wild-card team, McKeon said, would “help clubs like us and Washington and the Mets and some of the other clubs in the Central, because those teams [the Phillies and Braves] are just taking off.”
