House Leaders announced on Monday that they are shutting down the House page program, a nearly 200-year-old institution which allowed high school students to serve as messengers and learn about the Congress.

The program will end by Aug. 31.
The two leaders decided to end the House page program after an independent review of the program.
Pages earn about $1,800 a month.
The page program was in place to educate young students about the government. The Senate page program, however, will continue.

House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) and Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) announced they were ending the House page program.
Several current members of Congress served as pages, including the current Dean of the House, Michigan Democrat John Dingell.
According to Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid's office, the program for Senate pages will continue.
